Enligt SCB:s prognos förväntas efterfrågan på arbetsterapeuter öka med 25 procent och för att möta framtidens behov av fler arbetsterapeuter krävs att det årliga antalet nyexaminerade arbetsterapeuter ökar. Nu kommer Umeå universitet skapa möjligheter för fler att studera till arbetsterapeut genom att de bygger om sin utbildning till ett distansprogram. Det innebär att du som student inte behöver flytta och bryta upp från socialt nätverk och familj.

Hösten 2023 startar distansutbildningen, vilket innebär att den är möjlig att söka våren samma år. Det kommer underlätta för personer med begränsade pendlingsmöjligheter till Umeå och det kommer gynna Västerbottens inland som har extra svårt att bemanna sina tjänster.

Vid VFU (verksamhetsförlagd utbildning) har Umeå universitet ett utvecklat samarbete och avtal med Västerbotten, Västernorrland och Jämtland/Härjedalen. Det innebär att du som bor inom dessa områden har stora möjligheter att göra din praktik i eller i närheten av din hemort. 

Umeå universitet har även inlett ett samarbete med flera lärcentrum. Det är Akademi Norr som arbetar tillsammans med lärcentra för att göra distansutbildningar tillgängliga. De kan stötta upp med service och stöd och göra det möjligt för invånare att studera från sin egen kommun.
